Pittsburgh, PA - The Pittsburgh Water and Sewer Authority (PWSA) will perform fire hydrant flushing as part of its regular, annual distribution optimization program to ensure the best water quality for customers.
Flushing will take place in the following areas the week of August 3, 2015:
- Hazelwood neighborhood
- Greenfield neighborhood
- Brashear (upper north side streets)
Hydrant flushing is necessary to test the hydrants to ensure that adequate flow and pressure is available. Flushing also removes sediment from the distribution pipes to maintain water clarity and quality.
Occasionally, water can become discolored after hydrant flushing, however it is safe to drink. If this happens, run the cold water tap for a few minutes until the water clears. If it doesn't clear the first time, wait a few minutes and repeat this process. Avoid washing clothes until the water clears.
