Northside Water System

Using an interactive story map, our team has laid out the makeup of the water distribution on Pittsburgh's Northside. This map provides an opportunity to learn about the various pressure districts throughout the neighborhood and how topography affects water distribution. It also highlights some of the solutions underway to address concerns around water main breaks and water pressure, and provides an overview of the investment we are making to replace aging water mains and remove lead service lines.

Brighton Heights Water System Improvements

Pittsburgh Water is moving forward with improvements to enhance water service reliability in the Brighton Heights neighborhood. Construction will begin on June 29 for the installation of a new automatic control valve near Brighton Woods Road. The information below outlines the purpose of the project and what residents can expect during construction.

Project Overview
To improve system performance during water main breaks and other disruptions, Pittsburgh Water is installing an automatic control valve near the intersection of Brighton Woods Road and Benton Avenue. This new infrastructure will help the water system respond more effectively to pressure changes. When pressures drop, the valve will automatically engage to help maintain consistent service and reduce certain impacts for customers.

Anticipated Construction Schedule

  • June 29 – Crews will begin mobilizing at the site.
  • July 1 – Delivery and installation preparation of the underground vault that will house the pressure‑reducing valves. The vault measures approximately 9 feet by 15 feet and will sit about 2 feet below the street surface.
  • Through July 10 – Construction will continue within the intersection of Benton Avenue and Brighton Woods Road, extending about 150 feet toward Weitz Way. Crews will return at a later date to complete final pavement restoration.

What to Expect During Construction

Residents and businesses should anticipate:

  • Road closures and traffic restrictions
  • Noise from jackhammering and excavation
  • General roadway construction activity
  • One scheduled water outage lasting one working day—affected customers will receive a robocall with advance notice

Pittsburgh Water appreciates your patience as we complete these improvements to strengthen the Brighton Heights water system.
