2025 Special Initiative: Safe People, Safe Water

Pittsburgh Water views worker safety as the foundation for a thriving workplace, healthier and happier employees, and greater organizational success. Prioritizing safety also fosters trust and loyalty, leading to lower turnover and higher job satisfaction. In line with our Core Value of Safety, in 2025 Pittsburgh Water launched a new effort dedicated to safety: the Safe People, Safe Water program.

This organization-wide initiative is designed to reinvigorate our safety focus by empowering employees to proactively identify and report safety issues and near misses, work with their managers to analyze root causes, and establish corrective actions that prevent future incidents. In basic terms, the Safe People, Safe Water initiative is designed to unlock the problem-solving potential of our entire organization by engaging everyone in the effort to eliminate workplace injuries and other avoidable incidents.

Investing in the Safe People, Safe Water program is fostering a culture of shared responsibility for worker safety that not only benefits our employees; it also strengthens our workplace culture and better positions Pittsburgh Water to deliver on our promises to you. When workers feel safe and supported, they’re more motivated, engaged, and productive. A safe and efficient work environment minimizes disruptions caused by incidents or injuries, resulting in smoother workflows, fewer unplanned absences, reduced downtime, and overall better end results for our customers.

Since we launched the initiative last year, 100% of our 94 people managers and foreman completed training to effectively solve and learn from safety issues. Already we’re seeing results from this enhanced safety focus; 2025 was the first year that each of the key OSHA incident rates we monitor were below industry standards since we began tracking these rates in 2014. These rates show that in 2025, we had 6 fewer injuries that would cause an employee to be away from work or on modified duty. Another noteworthy improvement is the performance of our Water Operations group, who reduced their total injuries by more than 40% in 2025, their lowest injury totals since 2019.
