Water Wise: Don't let leaks sneak up on you!

Preventative measures are key to conserving water and lowering your monthly bill.
Pipe under sink

Taking preventative measures this winter is key to conserving water, avoiding water damage, and lowering your bill.

  • Monitor usage: A family of four should use about 6,000 gallons/month in winter. If you’re using more, there might be a leak. Track your water usage by visiting our Check Your Water Usage webpage.
  • Compare your bills: Notice any spikes in usage without a change in habits? This could be a sign of a hidden leak. Visit the Customer Advantage Portal to help you detect costly water leaks.
  • Test your toilet: Drop a dye tab in the tank, wait 10 minutes, and see if any color appears in the bowl. Replace worn-out toilet flappers and hardware.
  • Inspect faucets and pipes: Look for dampness around gaskets and fittings. Even small drips are bad news. Make sure all water fixtures are properly tightened to minimize dripping. If it’s time to replace fixtures, consider new, low-flow models. You may qualify to have leaks on exposed plumbing repaired and fixtures upgraded. Learn how here.
