The aerator at the end of your water faucet – the small cylinder-shaped piece, shown above – adds air into the water coming from your tap to reduce splashing and limit waste. 

Aerators catch some of the silt, minerals, and other debris that can flow through your tap water. Over time, this debris can build up and impact your home’s water quality. We suggest replacing your aerator every year and cleaning it twice per year. 

Most aerators unscrew from the faucet, but you may need to use a pair of pliers. Once removed, separate the aerator parts, remove any debris, then soak and scrub in white vinegar. Rinse and reassemble the aerator and reattach it to the faucet. If it’s time to replace the aerator entirely, try a low-flow device.
