About the Academy

This fall, Pittsburgh Water will launch the Community Water Academy—an opportunity for residents to gain an inside look at our mission, our investments, and the work it takes to deliver safe, reliable, and resilient water services every day.

Through clear explanations and shared vocabulary, participants will learn how ratepayer dollars support the systems and decisions that keep water flowing. The academy breaks down the regulatory, financial, and operational factors that shape long term planning and infrastructure investment. It also introduces the One Water concept, highlighting how individual and community actions contribute to water quality and environmental stewardship.

Participants will leave with a stronger understanding of Pittsburgh Water’s priorities, challenges, and direction—and will be ready to serve as informed community ambassadors who help strengthen dialogue and trust.

What the Academy Covers

Session 1

One Water, One Community: Building Our Shared Understanding

This opening session introduces the One Water concept and the interconnected nature of Pittsburgh’s water systems. Participants will build a shared vocabulary while learning about our services, core infrastructure, water treatment process, and how we ensure water quality. We will also discuss Pittsburgh Water’s mission, vision, and values, and identify community priorities that will guide conversations throughout the academy.

Session 2

Balancing the Flow: How Rates, Regulations, and Investment Shape Pittsburgh's Water Future

Since 2018, Pittsburgh’s water system has undergone one of the most significant modernization periods in its history—from replacing tens of thousands of lead service lines to upgrading treatment processes and rebuilding aging mains and reservoirs. This session explores how these improvements, along with evolving regulatory expectations, influence how we plan, fund, and sustain essential services.

Session 3

Stewarding the System: How Pittsburgh Water Plans, Prioritizes, and Protects Our Future

Look ahead to how Pittsburgh Water is preparing for the next several decades. This session provides a clear view of how we prioritize infrastructure upgrades, develop budgets, anticipate new regulations, and build long‑term resilience. Participants will also learn how community input and transparent communication support this ongoing work.
