On November 20, 2026, educators and community members are invited to join us at the Water Treatment Plant for an immersive Water Treatment Learning Lab led by Allegheny Land Trust and Pittsburgh Water. This full‑day, ACT48‑eligible workshop offers a behind‑the‑scenes look at how drinking water is sourced, treated, and delivered throughout the region. Participants will explore real‑world water quality challenges, learn about the science and technology behind treatment processes, and gain practical tools for incorporating water education into classrooms and community programs. Whether you’re an educator seeking professional development or simply passionate about environmental stewardship, this hands-on experience provides a meaningful way to deepen your understanding of local water systems.

A water science and infrastructure workshop for educators

Educators attending this workshop will have a variety of learning opportunities throughout that day, including a guided tour of the treatment plant, special water quality science and infrastructure topic presentations, an exploration of sharing career paths in water with students, and a hands-on, PA STEELS-linked curriculum mini-workshop to bring real-world water education topics to life in the classroom.

Approximately $100 worth of resources will be given to educators in attendance as well as a STEELS-linked curriculum guide. 

You must register to attend, no walk-ins will be permitted. You must attend the entire day to receive your resources.

5.5 hours of ACT 48 are available. Lunch is provided.

You will be required to sign a waiver on-site to enter the water treatment plant.
