Pittsburgh Water Advances Nearly $24 Million Investment to Improve Water Service in Three Neighborhoods

PITTSBURGH, PA – Pittsburgh Water is investing nearly $24 million to replace water mains and related infrastructure in Crawford-Roberts in the Hill District, and East Allegheny and Spring Hill/City View on the North Side.

The investment will strengthen water service and improve the long-term reliability of the system for customers. Construction is expected to begin this fall, with Pittsburgh Water anticipating issuing the contractor a notice to proceed by the end of October.

“Investing in our water system before problems occur is one of the most important things we can do for our customers,” said Pittsburgh Water CEO Will Pickering. “This work will improve reliability, modernize aging infrastructure, and help ensure these neighborhoods have a strong water system for decades to come.”

The 2025 Small Diameter Water Main Replacement Project will replace water mains, valves, fire hydrants, and service lines in areas identified through Pittsburgh Water’s proactive infrastructure planning.

Replacing aging water mains also supports Pittsburgh Water’s ongoing commitment to delivering high-quality drinking water from the treatment plant all the way to the customers’ taps, reinforcing the message behind Pittsburgh Drinks Tap and encouraging customers to choose tap water with confidence.

Project locations were prioritized using several factors, including the prevalence of lead service lines, undersized and dead-end water mains, and the condition and performance of existing infrastructure.

“Replacing these mains allows us to address several needs at once – reducing the likelihood of disruptive breaks and leaks, upgrading the valves, hydrants, and service lines that support reliable service throughout the neighborhoods, and replacing lead service lines,” Pittsburgh Water Chief Engineering Officer Rachael Beam said. “For customers, that means a stronger, more resilient system designed to serve them well into the future.”

The project is supported by financing from the Pennsylvania Infrastructure Investment Authority (PENNVEST), helping Pittsburgh Water make significant infrastructure improvements while responsibly managing the cost of this $23.9 million project.
