Pittsburgh, PA… An intense storm system moved through the city of Pittsburgh on Thursday evening, dropping more than 2.5 inches of rain in less than one hour in some city neighborhoods. This storm event, equating to a storm that would occur once every 50 to 100 years, produced more rainfall than the sewer system is designed to handle.

“Last night’s record-breaking storm exceeded the capacity of parts of our sewer system, and we understand how frustrating the resulting flooding and backups can be,” said Will Pickering, CEO of Pittsburgh Water. “Our crews are continuing to respond across the city, and we’re assessing where future improvements can be made to the stormwater system.”

Pittsburgh Water’s operation crews are cleaning catch basins and storm inlets and inspecting hotspots around Pittsburgh that are prone to flooding. This includes removing litter and debris from storm sewer infrastructure so excess rainwater can more easily flow into the sewer system. When faced with increasing amounts of rain, clean streets and gutters help prevent clogging and allow basins and inlets to drain properly.
