Our Workshops

Water Treatment Learning Lab  

The Water Treatment Learning Lab is a one-day professional development experience hosted at Pittsburgh Water’s Treatment Plant. Designed specifically for educators, the workshop offers a unique opportunity to explore the science, infrastructure, and careers behind Pittsburgh’s drinking water system. The workshop includes:

  • Source Water Protection Presentation: A deep dive into the Allegheny River’s geology, hydrology, and the historical and modern human impacts on this vital water source.
  • Interactive Plant Tour: A guided walkthrough of the treatment facility, where educators observe each stage of the water treatment process.
  • Water Quality and Emerging Trends: A presentation on water quality challenges, such as harmful algal blooms and watershed monitoring.
  • STEELS-Aligned Water Quality Science Mini Curriculum Workshop: A mini-workshop connecting water treatment concepts to Pennsylvania’s STEELS standards, featuring hands-on activities.
  • Careers in Water: A session that offers tools and resources to help educators introduce students to high-demand careers in the water sector.
     

Stormwater Science and Green Infrastructure Learning Lab

  • Pittsburgh's Stormwater and Sewer Story: A deep dive into Pittsburgh's storm and sewer infrastructure, history, and water quality connections.
  • Interactive Green Infrastructure Project Tour: A guided walkthrough of a Pittsburgh Water Green Infrastructure Project, where educators observe how project components manage stormwater. 
  • Stormwater and Climate: A presentation on the intersection of stormwater infrastructure planning and climate data.
  • STEELS-Aligned Stormwater Science Mini Curriculum Workshop: A mini-workshop connecting stormwater and watershed science concepts to Pennsylvania’s STEELS standards, featuring hands-on activities.
  • Careers in Water: A session that offers tools and resources to help educators introduce students to high-demand careers in the stormwater, sewer and engineering sector.
