Pittsburgh's water systems contain infrastructure that in many cases is several decades old and well beyond its expected service life. Many drinking water lines average 80 years old, reinforcing the need for continued upgrades and rehabilitation. Maintaining reliable water delivery requires routine upgrades, replacement of worn parts, and improvements to the water distribution system. Pittsburgh Water is investing significantly to ensure long‑term reliability and reduce service interruptions.

Water system improvements include replacing water mains, and reducing lead exposure by continuing the citywide lead service line replacement program.

Restoration of streets and sidewalks follows each phase as weather permits. Together, these combined efforts will help improve water quality, reduce sewer overflows, extend the lifespan of vital infrastructure, and enhance service for the East Allegheny, Crawford Roberts, and Spring Hill / City View.
